Meniscus Tear Treatment in Haywards Heath

An osteoarthritis diagnosis doesn’t mean your knee is “worn out”, and it doesn’t mean surgery is inevitable. Exercise-based treatment is the first-line recommendation for knee osteoarthritis, and most people can reduce pain and stay active with the right plan.

Does this sound familiar?

  • “My knee is stiff in the morning or after sitting”
  • “Stairs, slopes and getting out of the car are the worst”
  • “I’ve been told it’s ‘wear and tear’ and to just take painkillers”
  • “I’m trying to put off (or avoid) a knee replacement”
  • “I’ve stopped walking as far because I don’t trust my knee”

What is knee osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a gradual change in the joint – cartilage, bone and the tissues around them that can cause pain, stiffness and swelling. It’s very common from midlife onwards. Importantly, X-ray findings often don’t match symptoms: many people with “bad” X-rays function well, and vice versa. That’s why we treat you, not the image.

How we treat it

  • Progressive strength and mobility programme – the single most evidence-supported treatment for knee OA, tailored to your starting point
  • Hands-on treatment to ease pain and stiffness so you can exercise comfortably
  • Medical acupuncture, which many of our arthritic-knee patients find helpful alongside rehab
  • Össur knee bracing – we can advise on and fit Unloader-style braces that reduce load through the painful side of the joint
  • Activity and weight-management guidance that’s realistic, not preachy
  • Pre- and post-op rehab if a knee replacement is ultimately the right choice

How we treat meniscus tears

  • Thorough knee assessment and clear diagnosis, with guidance on when MRI is genuinely useful
  • Progressive strength and control rehabilitation for the knee and hip
  • Hands-on treatment including acupuncture to settle pain, swelling and stiffness
  • Sport- or activity-specific loading – squatting, twisting, kneeling – reintroduced in stages
  • Full post-operative rehab if you do have surgery, led by physios experienced in post-op knees

Frequently Asked Questions

Will exercise wear my knee out faster?

No, the evidence is clear that appropriate, graded exercise reduces pain and improves function in knee OA. Joints respond to sensible loading.

Can I avoid a knee replacement?
Many people manage well for years – sometimes indefinitely – with strength work, activity modification and weight management. Where a replacement is needed, rehab before and after makes a real difference.
Do injections help?

Some people get short-term relief from injections arranged via their GP or consultant. They work best as a window to rehabilitate, not a standalone fix – we can work alongside them.

What about knee braces?

For the right knee (particularly OA affecting one side of the joint), an unloader brace can meaningfully reduce pain during activity. We’ll assess whether you’re likely to benefit.

Testimonials

Martin fixed my running injury. He’s a 45 minute drive for me but it’s great to finally find a physio I can trust that actually fixes injuries. Highly recommended.

Phil Stevens

I went to go see Martin with my ongoing knee problems whilst playing football, he knew straight away what the diagnosis was. He started a treatment plan and within a few months I was pain free and back to playing football without any problems. I highly recommend the Health Hub!

I damaged my knee during the first game of cricket this season, Due to my lack of warming up and little exercise for the previous 6 months, the knee have lost its tone.
I was in crippling pain and could hardly bend it past 90 degrees.
It was suggested that I make an appointment with Martin.
From Martins bio, I could see that he was competent with sports injuries. Martin analysed the knee, prodded it, bent it and stretched it.
He informed me what damaged had occurred and what tissues were still OK.
After a deep knee massage, he asked me if I would like some acupuncture. This treatment was new to me and I was initially hesitant. Martin suggested that the needles would stimulate the healing process so I agreed. The sensation was strange but not too unpleasant.
I was given an exercise plan and agreed to return.
After three sessions, my knee was over 95% healed, I could hop on it and bend it as far as the undamaged knee.
Martin was very professional and I would be happy to recommend him to anybody with a knee injury.
Thank you for sorting out my knee.

I contacted The Health Hub 6 weeks ago as I was training for an event and was experiencing terrible knee pain in both knees to the point where standing and walking a few steps really hurt. The very friendly receptionist put me in contact with Martin who saw me the next day.
I was expecting him to say that I wouldn’t be able to take part in the event but he didn’t. He listened closely to everything I had to say, carried out his examination and explained very clearly what I had done to my knees by overtraining. He came up with a plan and started work immediately.
6 weeks later I have just completed a 100km ultra marathon with absolutely no pain at all!! The next day I was back on my feet mowing the lawn!!
I would like to say a huge thank you to the friendly staff at The Health Hub and Martin in particular as without his knowledge, support, help and answering my never ending questions I would not have been able to complete this long term goal. Thank you.
