Meniscus Tear Treatment in Haywards Heath

A torn meniscus – the knee’s shock-absorbing cartilage – is one of the most common knee injuries we see, in everyone from footballers to gardeners. The good news: many meniscus tears improve well with rehabilitation, without surgery.

Does this sound familiar?

  • “My knee catches, clicks or locks”
  • “There’s pain along the joint line, especially twisting or squatting”
  • “My knee swells after activity”
  • “I’ve been told I have a tear and offered a ‘wait and see'”
  • “I want to avoid an operation if I can”

What is a meniscus tear?

Each knee has two menisci – C-shaped pads of cartilage that cushion and stabilise the joint. Tears happen two ways: sudden twisting injuries (common in sport, often alongside ACL injuries), and gradual degenerative tears that develop with age, sometimes without a single obvious injury. The two behave differently, which is why an accurate assessment matters before deciding on treatment.

Do I need surgery?

Often not. For degenerative tears in particular, research shows structured exercise rehabilitation achieves outcomes comparable to keyhole surgery for many people, which is why rehab is now the recommended first step in most cases. Some tears (such as those causing a truly locked knee, or certain tears in younger athletes) do need surgical opinion, and we’ll tell you honestly if yours is one of them and refer you on promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I've torn my meniscus?

Joint-line pain, swelling, clicking, catching or locking, and pain with twisting or deep squatting are typical signs. A clinical assessment can identify a likely tear; MRI is only needed in specific situations.

Can a meniscus tear heal on its own?

Some tears (especially in the outer, blood-supplied zone) can heal; others don’t “heal” but become pain-free with the right rehab. Function, not the image, is what matters.

How long does recovery take?

Most people improve meaningfully within 6-12 weeks of structured rehab, depending on the tear and your goals.

Is it safe to exercise with a torn meniscus?

Usually yes, with the right modifications. Complete rest typically makes the knee weaker and slower to recover.

Highly recommended to anyone. Kirk was amazing not only knowledgable and encouraging when I felt super deflated but he took the time to create the best rehab plan for me. I injured my knee 12 weeks before my wedding and I thought I’d never be in a place to dance/ walk in heels in time but we did it so thank you!!!!

Jodie was recommended to me by a friend who spoke incredibly highly of her. She was able to squeeze me in when I had received a hospital cancellation. Her knowledge, empathy, kindness and practical approach is fantastic. She explained everything so clearly and her passion for what she does is apparent. I am so grateful for the care I have received from her and all the others in their welcoming team at the Health Hub and would absolutely recommend their services.

A hugely professional team. Recently I broke my shoulder and, as no NHS support was forthcoming, I booked in for physio with Kirk. The medical acupuncture and the exercises that Kirk gave me have been transformational in my recovery.

I highly recommend the Health Hub – very friendly reception staff, lovely rooms with quality equipment and brilliant practitioners. I’ve seen Martin for physio to aid recovery from a torn ACL, and Sam for a Chiropractor appointment for neck/back pain. Both of them are excellent, and Sam sorted my very uncomfortable back issue in just one session. Well worth the money.

Hayley Plummer

After years of pain, I’m finally seeing some results since coming here for physio and acupuncture. Thank you.

Jodie and the team at The Health Hub have been amazing!! So knowledgeable, I never thought that I would love acupuncture & physio so much, they have helped so much in managing my pain and recovery from a hip replacement, plus the girls on reception are all so welcoming, its a really nice place to go to, I can’t recommend it enough.

Rebekah Hardacre

I’ve been seeing Martin for knee pain, and I couldn’t recommend him more highly. From the first session, he took the time to listen carefully and understand the problem, then explained everything clearly in a way that made sense. His treatment and exercise plan were spot on—my pain started improving quickly, and I now feel much stronger and more confident.

I went to go see Martin with my ongoing knee problems whilst playing football, he knew straight away what the diagnosis was. He started a treatment plan and within a few months I was pain free and back to playing football without any problems. I highly recommend the Health Hub!

Martin fixed my running injury. He’s a 45 minute drive for me but it’s great to finally find a physio I can trust that actually fixes injuries. Highly recommended.
