Just saying Take 2, says it all really. None of us are perfect! The important thing to recognise is that when we fail it is simply about starting again. Nothing in life is easy but by getting started you are taking the first steps towards your new goal.
So, how’s my journey going…
I started with a physical assessment, clearly, I am in the fortunate position of being surrounded by a team of people that can help in that regard. Here is summary of what we found –
- Poor stability and mobility in my right ankle (good old rugby!)
- Weakness in my hip on that side
- Residual tightness in my left hamstring from an old partial tear (you’ve guessed it… Rugby)
- Weakness around the left knee due to old meniscal injury (Not rugby!)
- Anterior pelvic tilt due to Lower Crossed Syndrome – increasing my lumbar lordosis – have a read of my postural article to understand what this means!
- Limited toe touch – not because of tight hamstrings – because of the above. I will explain more on this next month!
- Weak left shoulder due to previous partial dislocation (I am sure you can guess the cause…)
Other than that, I am fine!!!
I think it is important to state I am not in any pain day to day. Yet clearly, I can still improve these areas of weakness to enhance the way my body functions and prevent future issues.
Lastly to get an idea of where my cardiovascular fitness is currently, I completed a 5km run – 28 minutes 37 seconds.
Fundamentally there is plenty of work to do, but the most important thing is the journey has started. Next month, find out what exercises I have included in my programme to specifically improve the above listed areas of weakness as well as general strengthening work.
The number one goal for me currently is to be consistent with the gym as this has always been my biggest battle, particularly with work demands, as there is always something I could be doing. My aim is to make the gym 4 times a week, which will include strength work and all the rehab elements needed to correct the list of issues. I have also booked appointments with our Sports Massage Therapists to work on my left hamstring and our physios to work on my ankle and knee!
